ABOUT

Massimo Pinca

Based in Geneva, Switzerland, Massimo Pinca works with period and modern ensembles, and develops his own original projects at the intersection of written and improvised music.

His work is grounded in two main fields: historically informed performance on period instruments, and free/creative improvisation. In both, he seeks a deep mastery of musical fundamentals that remain constant across styles. In early music, he performs with baroque and classical ensembles, exploring historical techniques and sound worlds on period double bass and related instruments. In improvised and creative music, he develops projects that focus on timbre, form, and mental awareness in performance, often blurring the boundary between composition and improvisation. Moving between these contexts, he treats different musical “languages” as variations of the same underlying principles, rather than separate worlds.

Alongside his performing career, he teaches double bass to kids and adults at the Conservatoire populaire de Genève, with a focus on musical fundamentals, mental and proprioceptive awareness in performance, and adapting to each student’s musical background and aspirations. He also teaches introductory courses on baroque double bass performance for modern players at the Haute école de musique de Genève.
